Thanks for sitting tough Zach.
In 2011 I was fortunate enough to go work with @sailorjerryswallow at the last shop he ever had. At that time he had recently made his way back east to New Glasgow from the west coast, and was back on Provost street. It was a small second floor shop about a block down from where his first Provost street shop had been. I had a few years tattooing under my belt at that point, and had been tattooed by Jerry a few times already, but being there working in his shop, I felt like a deer in the headlights. It was as real as it gets and everything I wanted in a tattoo shop. Jerry was staying in the shop at the time while working on the house he had nearby. He had a small room off the back and I slept on the floor in an adjacent room. He let me dig around in his boxes of flash and drawings and showed me all kinds of stuff that blew my mind. I tattooed a few of his kids and a few solid guys from Saskatchewan who also came up to visit him after the Halifax convention. It was an incredible week. Jerry is the last of his kind in this country. A pirate, a carny, and a no compromise, no bullshit tattooer who can put a design on at light speed and blow everything around it out of the water. I’ve met some great folks in tattooing over the years, some of whom are my closest friends, but Jerry is the coolest by far. I came across these pictures recently and it got me thinking about how much that trip shaped my perspective on tattooing. I learned more in that week than in all the previous years combined. So if you’re out there talking shit because you think I’m an asshole for doing it how I do it, just remember I learned from the best. 😘
